Increasing the Chances of a Great Family Skiing Holiday

Taking a family on a skiing holiday is certainly an exciting proposition, especially if it’s the first time the children have been to a winter sports resort. The combination of fresh air, continuous activity and good food normally leaves them happy, but tired, at the end of each day. They sleep soundly and wake refreshed each morning to start all over again. Many adults wish they could do the same just as easily!

But the cost of a skiing holiday for a whole family can be quite expensive, even if a suitable resort is chosen carefully and a close eye is kept on costs. For parents who have skied themselves before their children came along, taking the them along is the only way of continuing their own desire to ski or snowboard, unless they want to leave the children at home with friends or grandparents. Plenty of ski companies are used to this situation and have catered their packages to suit family groups by offering different childcare options in resort, special instruction for children and child-friendly catering. What they can’t ensure though is whether the children actually enjoy their skiing once they get there and that can be the big worry for parents taking their children on a winter sports holiday for the first time. For many parents, the thought of it all going wrong and the holiday turning into a disaster is enough to put them off completely. But, as a parent, what if you were happy beforehand that your children knew what to expect and were going to love it? Well that’s the opportunity offered by going along to an indoor snow centre before you book that trip abroad.

In the past some parents have tried taking their children for some pre-holiday familiarisation sessions at a dry ski slope, but these places are not always suitable for young children. The slopes are steep, uncomfortable for falls and quite far removed from slopes with real snow. However there is now a much better alternative. A “real snow” sports complex, like the new Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead near London, offers a range of sessions for children of all ages. For the very young, there is the chance just to play around in some snow, while older children can take their first steps in learning to ski or snowboard.

The Snow Centre offers private tuition for children as young as 3 years old and organised junior group tuition for children from 4 years upwards. The centre also has toboggans and ringos to provide even more fun. After a few sessions at The Snow Centre children usually can’t wait to get to the mountains to try out their new found skills. Knowing that the children are happy and comfortable on snow is very reassuring for parents taking them on holiday for the first time.

Safety is just as important at The Snow Centre as it is on holiday. All children aged 16 and under will need to wear one of the helmets provided and adults need to do the same in certain sessions. The centre encourages parents to set a good example in front of their children.

Another aspect of coming to a place like an indoor snow center is the opportunity to try out ski lifts. Perhaps you can remember the first time you had to get onto a POMA lift in a ski resort; quite a scary, high pressure situation, especially if you have a huge queue of people watching you! Several indoor snow centres have POMA button lifts, exactly like the ones you will find in many ski resorts and the staff will take great care to make the first time experience for children a stress-free one.

Language is not normally a problem with most European ski schools but if you prefer not to leave things to chance, it could be easier to get those first crucial lessons taught at home, in English, by teachers qualified with the British Association of Snowsports Instructors.

An indoor snow centre not only provides real snow, it also provides realistic temperatures. The cold environment gives children a chance to try out their winter clothing (or to realise that what they have is not going to be up to scratch). At The Snow Centre there is also a branch of Snow+Rock where winter clothing and equipment can be purchased as part of the visit.

Booking children up for a course of sessions at an indoor snow centre can be looked upon as a kind of insurance policy for ensuring a great winter holiday. There can be few happier moments for parents than watching their young children ski down the mountain for the first time, so all the preparation they do to make that happen will be well worth it.

Snowboarding- a Great New Hobby!

Are you getting a bit bored with your current hobby? Do you love your stamp collecting but feel you need something a bit extra- something with a bit of oomph? The needlework or knitting is enjoyable but granny’s being overwhelmed with all those sweaters you keep

making for her?

How about an exciting, thrilling, fast paced all action hobby? Snowboarding may just be that new hobby you’ve always wanted to take up but never quite knew where or how to start. It is gaining in popularity with each passing year and is a very fashionable or ‘hip’ kind of hobby to be involved with, and is more accessible than ever before.

But what do we need to get started with this wonderful pastime? Well, first things first- get yourself on to the nearest computer and get online. Type’snowboarding’ in to whatever search engine you happen to use and you will find that the internet is a goldmine of information for anything to do with snowboarding, and you will learn plenty by just surfing around different snowboarding sites and forums. This will help you understand what snowboarding really involves before you decide to take the plunge.

It can be dangerous and physically taxing, as well as being an expensive hobby to take up, so bearing all this in mind, you have to decide whether you can participate both from a physical and financial point of view.

Once you have taken the decision to try snowboarding out, the next thing you have to do is look for the appropriate equipment and clothing. Don’t make the mistake of buying a top quality board to start with. Go for a cheaper version especially designed for beginners. These boards are readily available online but can also be found in a wealth of sports, ski and extreme sports shops. Ebay would be the perfect place for a beginner to pick up some cheap equipment but as always with online auction sites, make sure you buy your gear from a reputable seller with a decent amount of positive feedback. Clothing and accessories are also readily available online or in stores, and some of the things you should be looking to acquire are hats, sunglasses, thick socks, gloves, etc. Just make sure you are prepared for anything Mother Nature can possibly throw at you!

You may want to look in to the possibility of having snowboarding lessons to help you on your way. Again by checking online you should be able to come up with some local or fairly local instructors but failing that the ‘yellow pages’ should sort you out. You have to be

aware that lessons will vary greatly in quality and price but if you do take up lessons always listen very carefully to what you are taught, not only from a performance perspective, but more importantly, from a safety one. And don’t forget the old adage that practise makes perfect. Get out there between lessons to keep improving your technique and you will see improvement. It may take a lot of hard work initially but you will definitely get there in the end and it will only help you enjoy your new hobby, or sport as it is officially known!

As we mentioned before, snowboarding can be dangerous- it is an ‘extreme’ sport, after all. Using a bit of common sense on the slopes and being well prepared well set you in good stead. Enjoy yourself but most of all- be safe!

How to Have a Great Ski, Snowboard Season

Be ready for the best Ski Season ever, ski like you never skied before. And now is the time to make that happen. After skiing more than a third of the year, more than a hundred and twenty times, I think I can offer some advice on how to ski more often and ski better.

Some years are remembered as better than others, but not for the snow fall necessarily but for the growth as a skier that made the biggest impact on me. The best years have been the seasons that I was in the best shape as I could be before the season starts. Are you going to be in the shape and condition that you need to be when it counts? Conditioning for skiing and snowboarding takes dedication to a routine.

Everyday that we don’t ski we need to be doing a conditioning exercise. One of the best things I did to improve my conditioning was quite simple, I changed my office chair for a balance ball. You know the exercise balls many used in a Yoga class. Sitting and moving on the exercise ball helps strengthen your core. The core muscle are vital to a high level of skiing. Another great piece of equipment is the Bean ( as seen on T. V. ) Just hanging out while watching T. V. or listening to a Tele-seminar, you will work your core into shape.

Keeping active all year round will contribute to your personal health and wellness. When working out or just out skiing or snowboarding, remember to stay hydrated. When our body is properly hydrated we can stave off fatigue and injury. Making the most out of a ski vacation without getting tired and have you miss out on some great runs.

Winter sports take on other needs that many people over look when they are planning a snowboarding or skiing weekend or vacation. Nutrition and rest play an important part in our enjoyment of winter sports. Eating right and drinking enough water will lead to better fun in the winter sun. Remember if you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Staying properly hydrated will also help you stay warm when out in the cold, your body needs enough water to function the way it was designed too.

So with good health and wellness all sports will be more enjoyable. Increasing your awareness of balance will improve your snowboarding and skiing. Using a balance board like “Vew-Do” or “Bongo-board” will help you become more sensitive to the small balancing moves, that will have direct results in your riding.

The better fitness you bring to the game the better game you bring. So now that you’re committed to being fit, the next step is learning the right moves. How our body moves while gliding down a mountainside can be graceful or not. Skiing can have the feeling of flying. Are you going to be in the best skiing shape that you deserve to be or not? It is your choice. Have the best ski season ever, now you know what you have to do.
